If they cannot read, words are noise. Icons plus one word still help you stay consistent when grandma is in charge.
Our picture-row layout uses large tap targets and few jobs. That is a feature. Resist adding “just one more.”
Icons that survive printers
Simple line icons print better than photos. If you customize, keep names short. “Toys” beats “please put all toys in the correct bins.”

- When do I switch to a grid?
- When they start reading the fridge magnets for fun — often 5 or 6 — or when they ask for “a real chart.”
