Should allowance depend on the chore chart?

There is no moral high ground here. Some families pay for jobs. Some pay a small allowance and still expect dishes. Both can raise decent adults. The failure mode is changing the rules when you are angry.

Write a three-line policy: what is unpaid membership in the household, what is paid, and when payout happens.

Three models that work

Flat allowance, chores expected. Commission: only completed optional jobs pay. Hybrid: a small base plus points for extras. Pick one for six months before you remix it.

Payout day

Friday or Sunday. Count points together. If you skip payouts, the chart becomes fiction. Keep cash or a transfer ready the way you keep snacks ready.

Questions parents ask

What if they do 80% of the jobs?
Pay 80% if you use commission. If you use a binary weekly privilege, decide the threshold in advance (for example, 20 of 24 boxes).
