Kitchen chore chart

The kitchen is where chore charts either become real or become fiction. Everyone eats. Everyone can carry something.

Split jobs by height and heat: counters and tables first, dishwasher next, stove last. A kitchen-only page is useful even if you also keep a whole-house chart.

By age

Start with the youngest job your child can do without a step-stool circus, then add heat and blades only after you have taught them.

  • 3–5: plate to counter, wipe table, napkins
  • 6–8: set/clear, unload unbreakables, simple snack from a shelf
  • 9–12: load dishwasher, counters, pack lunch, meal-prep washing
  • 13+: a weekly dinner, pots, fridge check, grocery list

Safety

Write “ask before the stove” on the chart if that is the rule. Charts should not silently authorize burners.

Questions parents ask

Daily dishes or a dishwasher night?
Daily for plates. A named dishwasher night (empty after school, load after dinner) prevents the mystery pile.
